The Mercedes Concept IAA is not your average run of the mill car. As Mercedes picks up the idea of coming up with a new concept car for this year’s Frankfurt motor show, we can see the future of auto-mobile design transforming – quite literally.
The IAA in the name stands for Intelligent Aerodynamic Auto-mobile. Just how intelligent you ask? The Mercedes concept IAA can greatly alter its basic shape to improve its aerodynamics as needed. Although this idea has been around since the days of VW Corrado, the Mercedes IAA takes it to a completely different level.
When the Mercedes hits a speed of over 80 km/hr, it undergoes a fascinating transformation in which the captivating and beautiful car transforms into an aerodynamics world champion. Eight segments extend at the rear increasing its length by up to 390 millimetres; front flaps in the front bumper extend by 25 mm to the front and 20 mm to the rear improving the air flow around the front end and the front wheel arches. The active rims alter cupping from 55 mm to zero, and the louvre in the front bumper moves 60 mm to the rear, improving the under-body air flow.
