The Yangon Photo Festival was started by a handful of photo enthusiasts in the year 2009. Yangon is located in Myanmar. Over the last few years, through the combined efforts of many different individuals, the festival has finally made its way to five different locations. The event now has master-classes in other parts of the country, as well as a program for underprivileged youth.
The festival is comprised of two main events. The first is a yearly festival whose purpose is to exhibit some of the best picture-stories to the Myanmar public based on specific themes. The committee also organizes various lectures and conferences. Yearly workshops make up the second and the most important part of the festival. These are organized to nurture and inspire a new generation of photo and multimedia journalists in the country.
In 2012, the Yangon Photo Festival was able to be held openly, for the first time since the conception of the festival. This was possible due to the recent leniency in the countries strict censorship laws. Due to this, there has been a tremendous growth in the media industry of Burma. There have been many additions to the weekly journals and news websites.
The journalists and citizens are now able to express themselves more freely. The committee expects the Yangon Photo Festival to reach international audiences thanks to this development.
